AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY WAR

BEGINNING

  • American victory at first battle of the war in Lexington and concord Massachusetts
  • British fall back to Boston and a siege of the city starts
  • Then the British win the Battle of bunker hill outside of Boston but are not able to break the siege

MIDDLE

  • British defeat American troops at New York and capture the city.
  • General Washington successfully crosses the Delaware river and captures nearly 1,000 German mercenaries.
  • American forces under general Horatio Gates and Benedict Arnold repel a British offensive of troops led by general John Burgoyne at Saratoga in New York and capture over 6,000 British troops

MIDDLE (CONT.)

  • Washingtons army retreats and spends the winter of 1777 at Valley Forge losing many men to disease
  • French join the war on the side of the Americans
  • French General Friedrich von Stueben arrives at Valley Forge and trains the Continental army with more military tactics and discipline

END OF WAR

  • Spain enters the war on the side of the Americans
  • British offensive in the south captures most of North and South Carolina but the American push back
  • American victory at the battle of cowpens in North Carolina pushes British back to Virginia
  • Surrounded by the French fleet and Washingtons army, British General Cornwallis surrenders effectively ending the war.

TERRITORY CHANGES

  • Americans gain all of Britains territories in America
  • France gets britains overseas colonies
  • Spain gets back Florida
