SALARY: $57,710

Education
___________

The basic requirement for a job in zoology is a degree in zoology or a more generalized major in biological sciences. A bachelor’s degree can be sufficient for a curating job in a zoo or as a biological technician, but the job market can be competitive. A master’s in a specific zoological branch such as marine zoology, animal science or genetics is important for a successful job application. A doctorate is essential for zoologists who wish to work in research at universities, government agencies or in the private sector.

The Job

Zoologists are animal scientists. They study the origin, development, behavior and habits of animals, and how animals interact among themselves and their environment. This knowledge can be adapted to study how animal traits pass between generations, how animal diseases occur, and their treatment. Zoology is a broad discipline. It includes animal life of all sizes, from single cells to elephants and sharks. During the course of his career, a zoologist may specialize in particular groups of animals he studies.

Zoologists also take care of animals. They care for them and then find the appropriate habitat for them to recover in.
