EXPLORATION

  • traveling in or through an unfamiliar area in order to learn about it

EXPEDITION

  • A journey undertaken by a group of people with a particular purpose

COMPASS

  • An instrument containing a magnetized pointer that shows the direction of magnetic north and bearings from it

SEXTANT

  • An instrument with an arc of 60 degrees and a sighting mechanism, used for measuring the angular distances between objects and especially for taking altitudes in navigation

LONGITUDE

  • The angular distance of a place east or west of the meridian of a celestial object, usually shown in degrees and minutes

LATITUDE

  • The angular distance of a place north or south of earth’s equator, or of a celestial object north or south of the celestial equator, usually shown in degrees and minutes

MERIDIANS

  • A circle of constant longitude passing through a given place on the earth’s surface and the terrestrial poles

GEOGRAPHY

  • The study of physical features of earth and its atmosphere and of human activity as it affects and is affected by the US including the distribution of populations and resources land-use and industries

CLIMATE

  • The weather conditions prevailing in an area in general or over a long period

BIODIVERSITY

  • The variety of life in the world or in a particular habitat or ecosystem

LANDFORM

  • A natural feature of the earths surface

ALTITUDE

  • The height of an object or point in relation to sea level or ground level

TOPOGRAPHY

  • The arrangement of the natural and artificial physical features of an area
