Innovation should look like..

An innovative lesson could look like this:

• The teacher introducing a skill
• Then modeling the skill for students in a variety of ways
• As a class trying the skills together
• Students demonstrating the skill

When the teacher is modeling the skill/students demonstrating the skill this is when innovation plays a really important role and can really happen.

This is when students could be participating in a voice/choice activity or answering questions and than completing a peer pair & share.

Another example could be, by giving students a variety of questions and increasing the difficulty as they go to challenge them and use their critical thinking skills. Then give students the opportunity to share their knowledge.

Another activity I like to model/have students try are different riddles or problems related to the skill of the day to increase problem-solving and working together as a class.

It is also important to question your students to increase the depth of the skill and keep the conversation going.

After every lesson, I like to have my students reflect. I have students write down their thoughts or I will also give them prompts to answer. I do the same and then this is a good starting point for the next lesson.

Innovation can look different everywhere.

Not every school can afford to have 1:1 technology and not every school has the ability to have a greenhouse or be able to go outside for lessons.

We may not all have the same resources but if we can all have the same open-minded mindset to continue to be creative and push our students innovation will happen.
