• He was the son of Robert Zezou Sambo and Annie Mabo

early life

• At a very early age Eddies Last name was changed from Sambo to Mabo.
• Full Name: Edward Koiki Mabo
• He was Born on the island of Mer or the Murray islands.
• In 1959 He moved to Townsville QLD

Mid Life

• He was an activist for the 1967 referendum campaign.
• He helped found the Townsville Aboriginal and Islander Health service.
• The issue of land rights became a focus of his energy in 1974.

Late Life

• May, 1882 a group of Miriam from the east of the Torres Strait Islands lead by Eddie lodged a case with the high court of Australia for legal ownership of land.
• Eddie was awarded the Australian human rights medal in 1992
• After being rushed to Brisbane hospital Eddie died from cancer on January 21, 1992

AFTER LIFE

• Only 5 months after Eddies death what he had been fighting for was announced
• Prime Ministers visited Eddies grave because he was a significant part of Australia’s history.
• On the 3rd of June every year Eddie Mabo is celebrated for putting an end to 2 centuries of British and Australians running under a fallacy
• The library where Eddie liked to study is now named after him 'Eddie Koiki Mabo Library'

mabo decision

• Whilst Eddie Mabo was working at the James cook university he discovered that his land was crown land
• Eddie did not believe that this was the case so he took it to court
• The court also believed that the land did not belong to him or his people
