Peripheral Intravenous Insertion

Indications

  • To gain access to the circulation of the patient peripherally. IV insertion is used for blood sampling, fluid infusion, and medication administration. Essential for management of a critically ill patient.

Contraindications:
When there is any concern for inadequate vascular flow.

Examples!

  • Extremities with edema
  • Extremities with burns/injuries
  • Cellulitis
  • Indwelling fistula
  • Same side as Masectomy

Complications

  • Complications are most commonly at the IV site. Phlebitis, infiltration, and interstitial leaking are common complications.
