Executive Branch – Tier 3 Vocabulary

BY SAMUEL SORENSON, A3

PARDON

a remission of the legal consequences of an offense or conviction
I chose this picture because Obama was president and part of the executive branch.

Cabinet: a body of advisers to the president, composed of the heads of the executive departments of the government

I chose this picture because it shows the advisers that are a part of the cabinet meeting.

VETO

a constitutional right to reject a decision or proposal made by a law-making body
I chose this picture because “no” is a synonym of veto.

EXECUTIVE ORDER

a rule or order issued by the president to an executive branch of the government and having the force of law
I chose this picture because it is an example of an executive order. In the picture, Trump signs the order to end separations of families at the border.

EXECUTIVE PRIVILEGE

the privilege, claimed by the president for the executive branch of the US government, of withholding information in the public interest
I chose this picture because it looks like the girl is telling a secret. This connects to executive privilege because the president can keep secrets from the public.

BUREAUCRACY

a system of government in which most of the important decisions are made by state officials rather than by elected representatives
I chose this picture because it connects to the idea of the state officials making decisions.

INDEPENDENT AGENCIES

INDEPENDENT AGENCIES OF THE UNITED STATES FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ARE AGENCIES THAT EXIST OUTSIDE THE FEDERAL EXECUTIVE DEPARTMENTS
I chose this picture because it is an example of an independent agency. It works with the government but is independent.
