  • Salat emphasizes discipline, spirituality, and closeness to god.
  • A muezzin chants to call the prayer
  • People face the qibla, which is in the direction of Mecca
  • Muslims may pray anywhere
  • Prayers are at dawn, noon, mid-afternoon, sunset, and after nightfall

ZAKAT

  • The Qur’an says that wealthy people need to share their riches with the less fortunate
  • Zakat reminds people of gods gifts
  • People need to share 2.5% of their wealth to the less fortunate
  • Zakat pays for soup kitchens, clothing, and shelter
  • Zakat is very similar to giving in other religions

  • Ramadan is the 9th month of the Islamic calendar
  • Ramadan encourages generosity, equality and charity
  • After people eat in the night they do a sunset prayer
  • When Ramadan ends there is a celabration called Eid al-Fitr
  • Ramada was the month that god reveled his message to Muhammad

HAJJ

PILGRIMAGE TO MECCA

  • Adult Muslims must perform Hajj once in their lifetime
  • Pilgrims must dress in simple clothing
  • Once they arrive they circle around the Ka’bah 7 times counter-clockwise
  • Pilgrims follow the footsteps of god
  • Before departure they must circle around the Ka’bah 7 more times
