You've got this!

3 Things You'll Walk Away With

  • professional network
  • tech integration action plan
  • tech tool resources
Supplies for your surviving and thriving.

NO ESCAPE!

widespread outbreak
District tech initiatives: either have adopted, set to adopt, or in process of deciding what to adopt.

Much like a zombie apocalypse, you didn't ask for this. You can't make it go away. And you're now asked to be something that you're not sure you can be (you can!), to survive.

There's a lot of fear. Anxiety. No footing. You feel like a first-year teacher all over again. (And who's got time for THAT?!?)

Education has changed; schools are catching up. (Paradox)

The Will to Survive

a choice you make
It's really about our attitudes and choices about change.

We know that change is constant, yet "Things don't stay the same, faster." --Dick Nachbar

Teaching has changed--the previous way does not fully serve its new one, and we must adapt.

Mindsets--Carol Dweck
Fixed mindset--"I have everything to lose by trying."
Growth mindset--"I have nothing to lose by trying."
Attention is on process, not outcome.

This is an exciting opportunity! For both mindsets and approaches!

You Are Not Alone!

in your school and beyond
You may feel like you are the last one to the technology party. You're not.

There is a wide range of tech savvy across districts. Use this as a personal learning tool, not a comparison tool!

You're not behind, you are right on track. And go forward!

SAMR

SAMR is a great place to think about how to mindfully incorporate tech integration into your teaching!

Focus is still on the student learning.

Classic SAMR model.

Example:
S--keyboarding vs. handwriting a paper
A--spell check!
M--electronically submitting the paper
R--electronically share paper with the class; teacher (and students) use comments feature, student uses given feedback to revise and edit

SAMR is an approach, a mindset. :)

LOVE this model the best! Not linear, allows for back and forth movement.

All areas are relevant and important.

They make floaties for a reason... Plus, there's usually a lifeguard.

Remember to occasionally take a pool break! :)

Other Survivors

the Who
Finding your team.

Professional networking, professional learning.

Look in-house, but also look beyond your immediate walls.

Professional Networking

Go now to this Padlet!

Double-click on the page to create a post, add yourself (name, contact info, what you can help with, what you want to learn more about)

It's all about connection. :)

Technology is used to bring us together, not to isolate ourselves.

Supplies

the What
For use in your classroom RIGHT NOW.

Begin where you are.

Personal Action Plan

for your classroom
Write it down--helps you focus your thoughts and give you direction!

tinyurl.com/TechActionPlan

Use an existing lesson plan, or topic that lights you up!

Pick 3-5 to revamp (or create), integrating technology.

Don't get hung up on which SAMR level it is--that's just to get you thinking and moving in those directions.

Go to the link, copy to your own Drive.

Tools/Weaponry

the How
Which tech tools to use?!? This is constantly changing.

Remember your objective. The tech tool is not it--focus on what you want the students to learn. The tech tool is the how--how they learn, how they show their learning.

What's the magic bullet? It's YOU!! This is awesome news!

Two approaches:
1. See one, do one, teach one.
2. Become an expert at one thing.

Both are valid; go with what supports yourself! And, this will change back and forth as you go forth.

Which Tech Tools to Use?

professional networking
Have conversations! In person and on professional social media.

Add your questions and suggestions to the Padlet (padlet.com/ginadrellack/SurviveTech)

Be open, not competitive with peers.

Learn from your students, too.

The tools are fluid, and come in and out of fashion.

Just like you shouldn't stay static with paper/pencil lessons, fear not changing/learning tech tools.

It's your approach, not the tool. The tool just helps your approach! :)

Safe Shelter

the When
Shelter is your classroom, and The When is what kind of safe, supportive timeline you are giving yourself for implementation.

your classroom

timeline for tech integration
So--your classroom, your school year. What commitment can you make for your Personal Action Plan time frame?

Will you tech integrate one lesson a semester? A quarter? A midquarter? A month? A unit?

Also, you are sheltering yourself with a reasonable, yet challenging, time frame...?

What's a safe way for you to start? (This will change as you become more comfortable.)

Remember: it's not a competition. Stay safe, stay alive.

Keep Going

JSS
JSS--Just Survive Somehow (The Walking Dead, Season 6)

Change that to:
Just Start, Sweetie! (Silly?)
and
Just Striving Succeeds!

There is no "having arrived"--remember, it's constant change.

ALSO REMEMBER: you are the "magic silver bullet!" It's your teaching, not your tools, that makes the most difference. (Your tools support YOU.)
