United Nations

• Is an intergovernmental organization to promote international co-opoperation

Iron Curtain

• Formed the imaginary boundary dividing Europe into two separate areas from the end of the WW ll in 1945 until the end of the Cold War in 1991.

Containment

• The action of keeping something harmful under control or within limits.

Brinkmanship

• The art or practice of pursuing a dangerous policy to the limits of safety before stopping, typically in politics.

Marshall Plan

• A program by which the United States gave large amounts of economic aid to European countries to help them Rebulid after the devastation of WW II

Cold War

• A state of political Hostility between countries characterized by threats, propaganda, and other measures short of open warfare, in particular.

North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)

• A military alliance of European and north american democracies founded after WW II to strengthen international ties between member states---especially the United States and Europe---and to serve as a counter-balance to the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact.
