As people moved west, slavery began to spread too because farmers in the West used slaves to run their farms.

The Missouri Compromise and the Compromise of 1850 were attempts to resolve the argument.
The Fugitive Slave Laws meant that black people could be forced back into slavery. The free states were no longer free.
