PHOTOSHOP ACTIVITY REVIEW

For this task I had to create the front and back of a practice digipak from provided pictures which were poor quality to create something better than the teachers bad example. Personally there are some elements of my design which could have been better however I believe its a massive step up from my teachers digipak baring in mind I have never used Photoshop before. Technology wise I think I could have used Photoshop to its full potential however that wasn't case, mostly because I had never used Photoshop so I was sticking to the basics however when the time comes to make my actual digipak I will search for tutorials online to widen my knowledge.

First I chose my picture which was kind of hard to choose because each picture that was provided was worst than the others. However I ended up choosing the one above as I thought I could easily make it a little better than how it was originally. However as I went on I was struggling first with Photoshop and trying the make the image better without making it worst.

As I was experimenting with different effects I had an idea to blur it so the name of the artist could stand out more. However I thought to myself, it wasn't an ideal picture for a front cover as the picture is not clear. I didn't want to make the image smaller so it doesn't looked as because I wanted to use the space effectively and looking at other digipaks the image usually fills the space.

When it came to the colour pallet, as my artists name is very playful and 'girly' I decided the colours should reflect the conventional POP genre and her image because she's wearing a light pink top so I decided to use the colours black, white and pink. These are common colours on POP digipaks and There quite simple colours as well. I merged both the pink and the white for the back of the track list this gives it a nice polished finished and keeps the back simple.Where the front has a picture of my artist I wanted the back just to be colour without a picture as I thought it would look crowded and the fact that I didn't have any other pictures of the same person added to my decision.

The layout is very much simple with the track list in the middle highlighting its importance. The title of the album and artist name to the side making sure it doesn't distract people from the image but as well they'll recognise the album and artist name more because of its in a clear place away from the main features of the image. I then went on to add the basic elements of a digipak which includes the record label, copyright information, artist website, barcode and album and artist name.

What makes mine better than the example?

1.Where I have kept my fonts to a minimum of 2 to keep it from looking 'tacky' the example above had used a variety.
2.My font links to the genre whereas there are mixed signs of what genre their example could be.

3.The images from the example looks as if its been stretched and the effect is not effective whereas my effect was used to distant the image from the title to make it stand out and be the main focus. Mine has meaning to it.
4.The image of the example may be misleading to the genre and the message the artist is trying portray where as mine is clear and corresponds with her name. It evokes innocence, playful and youth.

5. The title covers the artists face where as mine is distant from the main elements of the pictures.
6. The layout of mine is clearer in terms of the back cover and front.
7. The barcode of the example covers the copyright informations which is vital whereas mine is clearly displayed.
8. Finally there are parts of the examples back cover which are irrelevant for example the stretched image in black and white which does not connect with anything else on the digipak including colour pallet, genre or brand image.
