ARTISTS

second-self

I decided to use different artists in the cover and dps as I believe it is more intriguing for the magazine as a whole. This does not necessarily deviate from conventional features of a magazine as it has been done beforehand.

second self

  • They are twins who have created a sensation in the new wave of UK rap, their songs consist of escaping poverty and growing up in brotherhood. These impressions are also reinforced through clothing and body language, a ski jacket and track suit are pieces of clothing which don’t enforce a ‘lavish lifestyle’ which is the message I have been trying to get across.
more info:
• Body language is also an effective way to send a message to the audience, the way they pose in their photos promotes the more ‘cool and young’ type of view
• The colour black is a neutral colour which is known to be associated with mystery and is usually used for people who want to be discreet and subtle.

Pricey

pricey

  • He is a rapper who is known to be the money handler. Visually, he fits the stereotypical description of a gangster in London. He is also known to have connections with people who can get things for him, whether it’s a person to shoot a music video or someone to get him a specific type of clothing for his group, it’s all sorted.
more info:
• Both his clothing and body language reflect what people should see in his personality. A hand in the pocket whilst speaking on the phone makes him look cool, just as a rapper should be.

Costumes

costumes

  • For all models, the costumes/attire reflect the UK rap genre – use of baggy jeans (if any), dark colours (black, navy and grey), clothing is stereotypically ‘comfortable and not formal’ (track suits, puffed jackets etc.)

location

location

  • graffiti art used as a background at a park near brick lane, this gives the images an extra dimension for the urban look I wanted to achieve, the graffiti pieces I chose are portrayed to be something which is representative of the UK rap genre instead of a genre like rock or pop.

make-up

  • I didn’t want my magazine to be more of the glamorous type, so I used a predominantly male set of models as it reflects the genre in terms of both artists and audience. This portrays my magazine to be biased towards the male gender but it is something which I have concluded to be most appealing when it comes down to overall audience awareness

Body language

body language

  • most of my artist models went for a smug and serious look, rather than a happy and optimistic one, in my opinion this contributes heavily to the overall look my magazine has to offer. I was going for the stern look which allows my artists to be seen as true rappers, people who struggle with the life they have and express themselves through the music they produce.

Lighting

Lighting

  • in the location photography task, high-key lighting is used but it is not artificial and deliberate, this creates the natural look to my photos that I wanted to have especially considering the fact that the photography was done during winter time.

shot type

shot type

  • I wanted to have the main shot type to be medium and full body shots throughout the magazine so that I can potentially have a variety of looks and at the same time have images which I could use as backgrounds for the pages of my magazine.

what messages and values come across?

messages and values

  • Graffiti background represents an urban nature of the genre.
  • Gender – Heavily masculine, not necessarily objectified or sexualised but are still predominant due to the fact that the only gender found in my content are males
• Ethnicity/ culture – all ethnic groups are portrayed in an equal way, there is no deliberate method of superiority or inferiority in a particular ethnic group
• Age- The artists in my magazine are very young, the type that are just discovering what life is like as a young adult (17 – 20). The artists are not portrayed be the deviant type who look like they don’t follow the rules and dominate the streets. I wanted my magazine to create a new angle for London youth, especially considering the whole situation of the riots back in 2011
• Journalism – lexis used does reflect the genre of the magazine, particularly in the interview double page spread. The interviewee answers back in lower lexical terms which is exclusive to their background, phrases like “you get me?” and the overall tone of answers contribute to the dialect being focused on the genre. In other parts of the magazine the lexis is rather formal and can be understood by the average reader.

  • the age of my target audience is 16-24 years old, these figures are based off of XXL magazine's media kit but I have also contributed my own knowledge into this figure.
The target audience had also been inspired through the figures produced for the audience on LinkUpTV. They have an audience age range of 13-24 and they are known to be producers and distributors of UK rap music.
