Sensations anD PERCEPTIONS in psychology

Sensation is the process in which our sensory receptors and nervous system receive and represent information from our senses.

Perception is the process of organizing and interpreting sensory information, enabling us to recognize meaningful objects and events

ARE THESE TWO BLOCKS THE SAME SHADE? view slide notes

You believe these two blocks are two different shades. Well, look again but this time block the out the area where the two blocks meet. Is it the same shade now?

We perceive the color of the two blocks as different colors, however, this is due to where the object is lit and where the shadow falls. We would perceive them differently if there was no shadow and lighting.

Depth perception allows us to judge distance. In this image, it appears as if one figure is further than the other However, we perceive these this way because of the depth perception. The three figures are actually the same size and only appear to look further than the other because of the way they are displayed and lined up.

Which soldier is taller?

Neither of them are taller. They are all the same exact size! Due to the position and lines our brain perceives the image differently, it makes us think the soldiers are different sizes.

Is the circles in the center

The center circles are the same exact size! The circle size surround the center circle, which makes us perceive the images differently. Because the surrounding circles in the first one are smaller it makes the center circle appear larger. The circles that surround the second image are larger and makes the center circle appear smaller.
