Slide Notes

I was chatting with a friend who has a ton of experience in sales and building businesses. He has a heart for mentoring and often shares his valuable insights and information with people.

But people aren't always ready to hear what he has to say. So they don't take it in. They don't act. And he couldn't understand why they wouldn't just listen to him and do what he says.

The advice can be sound, but it can fall on deaf ears.

The lesson? You can't want it more than they do.

It reminded me of how I was early on in my coaching practice. I would run around "helping" anyone who seemed like they needed it. Spending a LOT of energy doing a LOT of different things. In the end I was always frustrated and doubted my abilities as a coach. It took some time to realize a couple of things:

1. They didn't want to be helped
2. I wasn't engaging them in what I believed in most and did best

All of this reminded me of this quote from "Bird by Bird" by Anne Lamott

Stand There & SHINE

"Lighthouses don't go running all over an island looking for boats to save; they just stand there shining."

-Anne Lammott

At first glance this can appear like passive behavior. Just standing there shining.

Standing there an shining doesn't mean NOT taking action, it means building a strong foundation and being focused with your action.

If a lighthouse wasn't built from a solid foundation, it couldn't stand.

And if it's light wasn't focused into a beam, it wouldn't be useful.

Solid Foundation

  • Your purpose
  • Your values
  • Who you are meant to serve
  • How you are meant to serve them
Building a solid foundation is about understanding yourself...really well.

It means digging deep and exploring the big questions and finding the answers so you can focus that beam of light and let it shine.

Shining Your Light

  • Demonstrate it in all you do
  • Share stories about it
  • Teach it
  • Write about it
  • Talk about it
Shining is all about broadcasting why you are here, what you're about and who you are meant to join up with.

You still reach out to people. You stay in touch. You connect.

AND you do all of that from your solid foundation.

You will be found

They will be ready
When you do this you stop the chasing. You stop the energy waste.

You become a beacon. You become magnetic. The clients, business partners and team members you need to live out your purpose and values find you.

And once they find you, they are more likely to be ready to hop onboard to help all of you take off!
