  • 15. Whose shrine at Canterbury is the destination for the pilgrims in Canterbury Tales?
  • 16. Define chivalry.
  • 17. What was the goal of the crusades?

King William owned all the land. He kept a fourth for him self, gave a fourth to the church, and gave the rest to his people, in return they promised him their loyalty. The Anglo-Saxons were peasants bound to land that they couldn't own. The church ended up owning more land than anyone in Europe.

Thomas Becket was a man who was good good friends with Henry II, Henry appointed him to Archbishop in planes of making the Church Court more like the Royal Court. He believed there was too much crime and the punishments weren't harsh enough. Becket refused to allow Henry to make the Church Court under Royal Court rule. Henry II, out of frustration complained about Becket. His knights took him seriously and decided to kill Becket to please their king. People then came to his shrine in memory of him with the belief they would receive good luck and be cured of sickness.

Chivalry: A code of honor intended to govern knightly behavior.
The code encouraged knights to be generous, brave, honest, pious, and
