  • Causes are unknown
  • Study believes smoking and drinking are contributing factors
  • Could be hereditary or an illness
  • Happens in the 6th week of pregnancy

TREATMENTS

  • Surgery has been used
  • Should be done by the eighth month
  • Can be done by orthopedic surgeons as well

  • Congenitital anomaly
  • A split in the lips, gums and hard palate
  • Impairs breathing, swallowing and eating

  • There are no known prevention methods
