Some of the things that we are able to consider when we are designing learning today

Why are we here?

We are a room of Learning Technologists and Lead Educators. What are you hoping to contribute and gain from this learning conversation?

We will be using Twitter to share our thoughts, questions and insights.

create impact, influence through the purposeful use of technology as learning design

When I think of the one thing that I want to share with you as part of this learning conversation, I landed with this.

How does this sit with you?
What do you notice?
What alerts to you have?
What does it mean?
Is it important?
Why?
Why not?

Obstacles between us & this outcome?
I have asked myself this...

The current situation and the one that we are moving towards.
As we move towards that horizon, what do we see, what do we need to know, what might be in the way, how do we move through, around, past, over, under this?

People of the paper paradigm, due to COMPLEXITY & overwhelming nature of digital, see it as an optional extra

A paper based world of thinking and a digitally connected world of thinking.

Your thoughts?

When we have too much information, we will behave as though we have none.

Implications for our work and our attempts to influence and progress ourselves and others?

stepping into, otherwise they act like there is nothing

What are the possible entry points?

How do we form learning conversations and beautifully inviting questions that compel movement towards the digital.

How do we combine the best of paper and the potential of digital in meaningful ways as Learning Architects?

What are we designing?

How will we build it?

What will we use?

Moving from drowning to immersion

We are comfortable in this space.
We enjoy being immersed.
We are strong swimmers and can hold our breathe.
What happens when we try and force people into this space?
How might we approach this differently?
What is the one thing that we could do that will make it easier, or no longer necessary to...
What is your one thing?
What is their one thing?

What could you talk about for 3 hours?

Combine that

deep focus on the 1 thing

& hopscotching busyness
There is plenty of white noise for us and them.

How do you reduce the white noise and tune in?

How do you see others doing this?

How do you influence others so that they are able to develop their own skills and knowledge in this space and then apply their own strategies to sustain their focused work?

From input-dominant to output focused

I find that I was previously input dominated.

There was a constant stream of it and there still is.

I started flipping my focus by starting with the outcomes that I wanted to achieve and then paid more attention to the inputs that would progress me towards the achievement of the outcomes I wanted.

What might this look like for you?

What are the questions and the thinking that you would use to explore this?

control is found in what we choose to do

Your choice?

not the waves

those we choose to catch
I enjoy surfing.

It is not all the waves that I have to consider and commit to, it is the one that I want to catch that will move me forward.

Keep it simple
let go of dependence on inputs & focus on outputs

If the output you want is learners who have been intellectually stretched as a consequence of your learning design, what are the inputs that will form the basis of your attention?

How will you filter out the others?

What is the one thing that you want to achieve in 5 years time. What is that outcome? Describe it in detail. What is it an abundance of? What is it an absence of?

What is the one thing this year you need to do to achieve progress towards the 5-year outcome?

What is the monthly thing that will progress the one-year thing that will achieve the 5-year thing?

What is the one thing for this week?

What is the one thing today?

Melbourne Declaration

Goals for Young Australians
This is an important document for educators to familiarise themselves with because it requires a focus on learning technologies and digital pedagogy to deliver this as an entitlement.

Do you agree?

Why, why not?

Weinberger

Too Big To Know
Such a clever thinker.
His book changed the way I think about my work.
I hope it does the same for you.

Who progresses your thinking?

Who are your current conversations with that progress your digital capabilities as a designer of learning, physical and virtual?

Are there others that you know of?

Please share them via #newbasics

Here is a clip where he shares his thinking.
