Slide Notes

Good afternoon! My name is Salsabel Abuazza from 11YER. Today, I’ll be talking to you about my aspirations for my hopeful career in Aerospace engineering… and no I’m not going to be venturing into the depths of space but indeed ROCKET SCIENCE… in a way. Aerospace engineering is branched into 2 main branches, these 2 branches are aeronautical and astronautical engineering. The difference is that aeronautical engineering focuses on aircraft inside the earth's atmosphere such as aeroplanes whereas astronautical engineering focuses on spacecraft that works outside the earth’s atmosphere such as rockets and satellites. For such a highly demanding career, those who venture into this path must acquire many assets in order to be successful.

Why?

Now, why do I want to be an astronautical engineer you may ask? Imagine a world where humans are able to live on other planets! Or where we could travel to space more frequently to answer our most curious questions. I want to be part of this journey. With my combined love for physics and maths, I feel as though I’d enjoy being part of such an amazing project. we are the people of tomorrow, the generation of tomorrow. With a constantly augmenting sector, I feel as though astronautical engineering is the future. With such a large number of different jobs, you can work in, it's such a great career option.

Education

Many people applying for aerospace engineering have to excel in particular areas such as maths and physics. For top universities, many of them require you to have high GCSE grades and in A-levels an A* in physics and maths and an A on the subject of your choosing. What I intend on doing is maths, further maths and physics which would hopefully be able to carry me into aerospace engineering where I hope to get a job in astronautical engineering where I'd develop, design and build prototypes of future spacecraft.

Degree- What It Entails

There are many types of aerospace engineering degrees that you can do. The one that I'm interested in the most is aerospace engineering with a year abroad which means you'll study a year abroad in your 3rd year of university. this degree includes masters so those who pick this course will study for 4 years and end up with masters which they could then enter the workforce with.

Women In Engineering

Engineering is a male-dominated sector. More and More companies are looking for female representatives to join them. the problem with this is that not many women are joining sectors such as aerospace engineering.

Undergraduate in Aerospace Engineering

as you can see, just in aerospace engineering alone there are only 16% of women partaking in it. this is a large influence on my reason as to why I want to be an astronautical engineer. it makes me determined to strive and do my best in order to be one of the few female aerospace engineers

Hard work and salary

Although aerospace engineers work 37-40 hours, their starting salary is around £22,000-£28,00 without experience whereas if one has experience then it could rise to £40,000. At senior levels, aerospace engineers can make over £60,000 per year.
