CELL ENERGY

GRACE AND CAROLINE

Photosynthesis

Photosynthesis is the process in a plant cell that turns sunlight into food using the chloroplast.

  • Photosynthesis is the process in a plant cell that turns sunlight into food using the chloroplast.

PHOTOSYNTHESIS REACTANTS

  • Light Energy- The plant gets this from rays from the sun.
  • Water- The plant sucks up water from the roots that are in the soil.
  • Carbon Dioxide- The plant gets this from the air surrounding it.

PHOTOSYNTHESIS PRODUCTS

  • Oxygen- This is waste, plants take in carbon dioxide and let out oxygen.
  • Sugar/Glucose- Some of the particles of sugar are used for food, others are broken down for releasing which is used to help carry out plant functions.

Cellular Respiration

Cellular respiration is the system that takes place in both plant and animal cells and turns food into energy by the mitochondria.

CELLULAR RESPIRATION REACTANTS

  • Oxygen- The plant gets it from the air surrounding it.
  • Glucose- The plant gets it because it is made in all green plants leaves.

CELLULAR RESPIRATION PRODUCTS

  • Carbon Dioxide- This is waste for the plant.
  • Water- This is waste for the plant.
  • Energy- This is used thoughout the cell to complete functions.

Fermentation

This system takes place in the cytoplasm and is used in both animal and plant cells and turns food into energy with no oxygen and is only used when cellular respiration doesn't work or can't get oxygen.

FERMENTATION REACTANTS

  • Glucose- Animal, animals get this from the food they eat. Plants, plants get this from photosynthesis.

FERMENTATION PRODUCTS

  • Energy- This is used throughout the cell to complete the cells functions.

SIMILARITIES BETWEEN THE SYSTEMS

  • All of the systems creat either food or energy.
  • All of the systems have glucose as either a reactant or product.
  • All of the systems happen in a plant cell.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE SYSTEMS

  • Photosynthesis occurs only in plant cells while cellular respiration and fermentation occur in both plant and animal cells.
  • The systems all occur in different parts of the cell.
  • Fermentation only created a small amount of food and does not need oxygen.

Photosynthesis AND CELLULAR RESPIRATION TOGETHER

  • Photosynthesis and cellular respiration work together.
  • Photosynthesis turns sunlight into food.
  • Cellular respiration takes the food made from photosynthesis and turns it into energy fro the cell.
