It's still dark......

They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes. When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an impure spirit came from the tombs to meet him. This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain.

No one was strong enough to subdue him. 5 Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.

Recognize
the problem is spiritual vs. 1-5
A man "living" among the dead - what a great symbol of life without Jesus
possessed by an evil spirit
having "in" him
an unclean - ritually repulsive, sinful, wicked
spirit - a spiritual being created by God who rebels against God and opposes God, his agenda, and anyone who aligns with God, a third of all the angels now make up this group Rev 12:3-9
supernatural strength - no one could bind him anymore
chained hand and foot for awhile common way demons are described restrained....Rev 20:1, 20:10,21:8
yelling loudly, incoherently
mental illness - we learn in the next few verses that after Jesus rescues him he is now of sound mind
cutting himself
When sin is left to run unrestrained in a person's life - this is what you are headed for.......
We have a problem for which only Jesus is the solution

When he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped Him. And he cried out with a loud voice and said, “What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God?
11 Now a large herd of swine was feeding there near the mountains. 12 So all the demons begged Him, saying, “Send us to the swine, that we may enter them.” 13 And [d]at once Jesus gave them permission. Then the unclean spirits went out and entered the swine (there were about two thousand); and the herd ran violently down the steep place into the sea, and drowned in the sea.
I implore You by God that You do not torment me.”For He said to him, “Come out of the man, unclean spirit!” Then He asked him, “What is your name?” And he answered, saying,
“My name is Legion; for we are many.”Also he begged Him earnestly that He would not send them out of the country. Now a large herd of swine was feeding there near the mountains.

Confront
the legion vs. 6-13
Jesus allows them to approach
Take a posture of humility
Before the Son of the Most High because they realize who Jesus is
Uncertain about what is going to happen, they know judgment is coming some day, but what is happening today?
Plead for mercy
please do not torutre us
please do not send us out of the area - territorial spirits perhaps who if out of their area, will have no authority
Plead for permission
to go into the pigs instead of ending up in chains in hell tortured until judgment
pigs.....an animal as uinclean as the evil sprits Jesus is talking with
areessentially relocating this legion sized demonic force, reminding me that judgment for Satan is coming, but until then we need to be ready to confront them

Choose
your response vs. 14-17
People had an interesting response to Jesus deliverance of this well known man who lived in the tombs.....
First the pig tenders told everyone in town
folks, probably the pig owners as part of this crowd...
came out to investigate
they saw the pigs floating in the lake perhaps, they at the least heard the story, because these pig tenders were well known in the community
they saw the man....
sitting still - Jesus provides peace in our heart
dressed - restores our dignity
in his right mind - sound mind and behaving responsibly, "normally"
they were visibly shaken by what had taken place
their livlihood was destroyed
they ask Jesus to go away.........
instead of embracing what Jesus could do for them or the people thye love, it was just too much to take in, not to mention how much money they just lost.....
sometimes people don't want what Jesus offers......
but the man whose life was changed....he had a different approach

And when He got into the boat, he who had been demon-possessed begged Him that he might be with Him. However, Jesus did not permit him, but said to him,
20 And he departed and began to proclaim in [e]Decapolis all that Jesus had done for him; and all marveled.
“Go home to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He has had compassion on you.”

b. released me from the shackles that remained from being chained up
c. brought me from inner turmoil to peace
d. isolation to a place of interacting with others

a. he could have left me there.........but He didn't

c. he could have ignored me, but he called out my oppressors and sent THEM away instead

People were amazed - in wonder, amazement, astonished at the change in this guys life....
our story has more influence than we realize
