Mediation is a no cost service provided for all IDEA related cases
Office of Dispute Resolution will provide a neutral mediator for the IEP
There are two types of mediation that are available to parents and schools that the Office of Dispute Resolution provides, Faciliatative and Evaluative Mediation.
A Facilitative mediator does not decide the outcome, they guide parties to common ground while finding areas of agreement without giving Evaluative feedback
An Evaluative mediator is a special education expert that helps parties examine all potential outcomes. They ask directive questions and offer feedback based on possible outcome.
Neither type of mediator will decide the outcome. That is up to the IEP team.
