THE SCARLET LETTER BY NATHANIEL HAWTHORNE

BY NATHALIA DE ANDA PERIOD 5

WHY IS SELF REFLECTION NECESSARY FOR MENTAL HEALTH?

In the article, “The Importance of Awareness, Acceptance, and Alignment with the Self: a Framework for Understanding Self Connection” Kristine Klussman and associates discuss the significance of self connection and how it can better the well being of individuals. The article was found in Europe’s Journal of Psychology in the U.S National Library of Medicine. Klussman and associates argue that self connection can help people pursue a life “well lived” and closer relationships.

Being self connected requires three things. The first is being aware of the self. This means knowing your preferences, psychological state, resources, and instincts. In the Scarlet Letter, Hester Prynne is aware of her choices like staying in town because of the one “whom she deemed herself connected to” despite the shame it will bring her.

Accepting who you are is the second step for self connection. This is where you completely accept who you are, the decisions you make, and your preferences. This kind of acceptance requires an honesty and openness with oneself. Similarly, Hester accepts “her realities”. Interestingly, enough, coming to terms with herself helps her have compassion on other people who are struggling.

The third and final component is about aligning your behaviors with this newly, accepted self. This means behaving in ways that are consistent with your preferences, psychological state, instincts, etc. Likewise, once Hester integrated her experiences and reflected upon them, she began to act in different ways. As someone looking from the outside, she began to see the error in society and not her sin with Dimmesdale . The author even goes as far as to say “the Scarlet letter had not done its office.”

Self connection can affect your goals and social connections but it can also contribute a more positive affect on our daily lives. While the specifics are still being studied today, researchers are optimistic that new ideas will be formed that will propel the research further. The article I chose was a framework of how to get there. Using strategies like mindfulness, physical activity, and even journaling can promote better self alignment. To improve our mental health we must first recognize the importance of reflecting on ourselves.
