This a talk I gave at various events in Italy during the spring of 2015. This talk focused what is interesting about NYC for Italian businesses and why they should consider NYC as the first destination for expanding their businesses internationally.
Italian is a love brand to Americans. It is a fantasy destination and a pilgrimage trip. Italy has not exploited this to,it's full effect yet and the while the tourist industry is large it is disconnected from the overall economic development of Italy. This remains a substantial opportunity.
NYC has as many people identifying themselves as Italians as their are people who live in San Francisco. This is larger than many Italian towns. 50000 of them were born in Italy.
Their are as many Italians globally as their are Italian in Italy. This is a huge market that remains untapped and makes it much easier for Italians to do business globally.
Italian Americans have left a legacy on NYC. Laguardia is responsible for the infrastructure the NYC thrives on. He remains as one of the most effective politicians that the city ever had. He fought for the rights of all people in Nee York.
Trade between the U.S. and Italy continue to grow with Italy exporting more than twice what it imports. The US and Italy have a very important trade relationship that can grow well beyond the current levels.
The CUOMO family is considered a political dynasty and his father was revered as governor of NY State. His son follows in this influence. Many people expect that he will run for President someday. They represent the pride of Italian Americans accomplishments and confidence.
It is really easy for an Italian to feel as if NYC is a place for them. It is one of the only North American cities to have an Italian language daily newspapers with significant circulation.
US imports from Italy have a lot of variety across sectors, with all food related produces making up a large portion but it also includes industrial equipment as well as all, other sectors.
The mayor of NYC is also a proud Italian American who after he was elected made his first international trip to his home town in Italy. He has publicly committed to help Italy succeed in doing business in NYC.
