Main Idea

The population of refugees has risen over the past decade.

IMPORTANT DETAILS

  • The refugee population has tripled since 1980
  • A 2007 report counted at least 11.4 million refugees.
  • Most refugees reside in LDCs.
  • Refugees migratey to equally poor countries.

Refugee: A person who has fled their country due to political persecution to seek asylum in another country.

Internally Displaced Person (IDP): Someone who has been displaced within their own country. Usually undercounted for the country's census.

Asylum: The right to protection in the first country the refugee arrives in.

Repatriation: Process of governmental or non-governmental helping to return refugees to their homeland after the violence subsides.

Modern News:
European governments are aiming to deny refugees of asylum by funding and building camps in Africa and outside of the European Union.
