A CHRISTIAN EUROPE

  • Two separate branches of religion formed.
  • Lead by a pope
  • Catholic Church spread roman culture & law to Germanic groups

THE MIDDLE AGES

  • A.d. 800 a Germanic King united most of Western Europe
  • After he died the empire fell apart
  • Nobody was able to help Western Europe withstand invaders

ROME'S DECLINE

  • By 300 a.d. The Roman Empire was in decline
  • It split into two parts - the eastern and western
  • The western was strong and was known as the Byzantine empire
  • Despite falling to Germanic leaders, Rome still had great influence on Europe and the west.

THE RENAISSANCE

  • Interest in art and learning revived after Europe recovered from the Black Death
  • The renaissance thrived in Italian cities and states
  • Merchants gained wealth and used it to support scholars and artists
  • People took and interest in Ancient Greece and Rome
  • Renaissance ideas spread from Italy to other parts of Europe.

THE REFORMATION

  • In 1517 Martin Luther King set out to reform church practices
  • The pope didn't accept Luther's ideas
  • Luther broke away from the Roman Catholic Church
  • Luther's ideas sparked a religious movement called the reformation

A NEW ERA FOR EUROPE

  • In 1998 people in Western Europe forced several communist governments from power
  • They set up a new democracies
  • A year later east and west Germany became a demacratic state
  • In 1991 the Soviet Union broke apart
  • In 1993 several democracies in Western Europe formed the European Union

THE CRUSADES

  • The Muslims took control of different parts of Europe and Palestine
  • In the early 1,000s nobles fought together to take the land back
  • After the war, goods began to flow easier
  • Between Europeans and Muslims.

EUROPEAN EXPLORATIONS

  • In the 1400s Portuguese navigators developed new trade routes
  • They sailed south around the continent of Africa and Asia.
  • In 1492 Christopher Columbus tried to find a different route to Asia
  • In the Americas Spain found gold and other resources.
  • They grew wealthy as a result of its overseas expeditions.

INDUSTRY AND CONFLICT

  • Instead of making goods by hand people use machines and building factories
  • Thanks to new inventions such as railroads travel improved
  • Many people left farms to get jobs in the cities.

THE ENLIGHTMENT

  • Europeans used science to explain the world
  • During the revolution Europeans relied on reason rather than faith
  • John Locke believed that if the government didn't protect rights
  • Citizens could over power them
