Marilyn Monroe was born on June 1, 1926, in Los Angeles, California. She was born as Norma Jeane Mortensen and then later on baptized as Norma Jeane Baker.
Growing up, Monroe spent most of her time in foster care and in an orphanage. In 1937, a family friend and her husband, Grace and Doc Goddard took care of Monroe for a few years. The Goddard's were paid $25 weekly by Marilyn's mother to raise her. However, when Doc's job was transferred in 1942 to the East Coast, the couple could not afford to bring Monroe with them.
At seven years old, Marilyn returned to a life in foster homes, where she was on several occasions sexually assaulted; she later said that she had been raped when she was 11 years old. But she had one way out and it was to get married, she wed her boyfriend Jimmy Dougherty on June 19, 1942, the age of 16. However, by that time she had already dropped out of high school (at the age 15).
A merchant marine, Dougherty was later sent to the South Pacific; Monroe went to work in a munitions factory in Burbank, California, where she was discovered by a photographer. By the time Dougherty returned in 1946, Marilyn had a successful career as a model and had changed her name from Norma Baker to Marilyn Monroe in preparation for an acting career. During her modeling career, she had dreamt of becoming an actress like Jean Harlow and Lana Turner.
During Marilyn Monroe's life period there where some historical events that occurred. In 1929: stock market crashes- depression begins, in 1931: Hitler begins to take power in Germany, in 1932: Franklin Roosevelt was elected president. Also in 1939: WWII starts in Europe, in 1951: 22nd amendment, in 1954: Brown V. Board of Education, in 1955: the Montgomery Bus Boycott. There where other historical events that happened shortly after the Montgomery bus boycott and they are the Lunch counter Sit-Ins that occurred in 1960 ( in the South)- it was also the beginning of the civil rights movement and also the Cuban missile crisis that occurred in 1962. All of these events that happened during the time that she was born and to the year she died did not affect her in any shape or form.
Two major accomplishments that Monroe had was: that she was only the third female to start her own production company and also the very first person to start an independent film production company. She named her company- Marilyn Monroe Productions and that happened in 1956.
Marilyn Monroe is a good leader, because she was an inspiration to all women by recognizing her own flaws and stated that she wasn't perfect in many of her quotes. Since she had a rough childhood going from foster home to orphanage and back then when she was younger people told her that she wasn't beautiful, Marilyn Monroe had told many people that it doesn't matter where you come from and/or what it was like growing up everyone is beautiful and unique in their own way no matter how many mistakes or obstacles that occurred in your lifetime.
