Florence Nightingale was born in Florence, Italy on 12 May 1820

At the time of her birth, many girls didn't receive a education. But her father, William Nightingale, believed that all women should have a education. He taught her and her sister subjects such as science, mathematics, history and philosophy. She also gained a interest in hospitals.

At first, her parents refused to let her be a nurse for educational purposes. But she did not give up, and by 1851 her father let her go to Germany to train as a nurse.

And by 1853 she was running a hospital in London

As she grew up she developed a interest of helping others. She cared for sick pets and people whenever she could.

In 1859, She was elected the first female member of the Royal Statistical Society. She later became an member of the American Statistical Association.

She was described as "a true pioneer in the graphical representation of statistics"

She is credited with developing a form of the pie chart now known as the polar area diagram or sometimes the Nightingale rose diagram.

She used these the show the seasonal sources of patient deaths in the military field hospital she ran.

Sadly Florence Nightingale died on August 13, 1910, London, England after a heart failure.
