CHILDHOOD

  • He first learned how to play the piano from his sister Laurine
  • He was born in Brooklyn NY
  • His parents were Sarah and Harris Copland
  • His siblings are Josephine,Laurine,Leon, and Ralph
  • He was born into a Russian and Jewish family.

SCHOOLING

  • Rubik Goldmark taught him composition
  • He wrote over 60 articles and essays as well as five books.
  • At 15 he decided to become a composer

SUCCESSES

  • Wrote three ballets based off of American folk music
  • In 1935 was his most popular and most successful year.
  • In the 1950s he did less composing and more conducting.
  • He received more than 30 honorary degrees.

WRITING MUSIC

  • He first style of music was jazz then he later on moved to classical
  • His goal was to make classical music as popular as jazz
  • Mostly wrote for piano and organ

PIECES OF MUSIC

  • One thing he wrote was the organ concerto

He wrote the organ concerto while working as a pianist at a summer resort in Pennsylvania.

His premiere for his organ concerto was held at Carnegie hall. It is located in Midtown Manhattan New York

DEATH

  • He died of Alzheimer’s disease and Respiratory failure.
  • His ashes were scattered over Tangle wood Music Center
  • Died at age 90
