SAINT SEBASTIAN’S LIFE (DAN)

  • Born in Narbonne, France
  • Was a soldier in the Roman army
  • Diocletian discovered he was a Christian after promoting him to Praetorian Guard to protect Emperor Diocletian.
  • Converted many people to Christianity
  • The Roman Catholic feast of Saint Sebastian is January 20
  • The orthodox feast of Saint Sebastian is December 18
  • Saint Sebastian died in Rome, Italy in 288 A.D

HOW HE WAS KILLED (AUSTIN AND ANDREW)

  • Saint Sebastian was killed because he was discovered to be a Christian
  • Diocletian ordered for Saint Sebastian to be tied to a stake in a field and shot over and over by arrows until death
  • Did not die from the arrows. Died from being clubbed.

PATRONAGE (MATT)

  • Saint Sebastian was a patron of a soldier
  • This was because he had enrolled into the Roman Empire army himself
  • He was also a patron of archers
  • This is because he was shot to death by archers and their arrows

EXTRA ABOUT SAINT SEBASTIAN (ANDREW)

  • Converted a family of four to Christianity
  • This family was the twins Marcus and Marcellian along with their mother and father
  • After being shot with arrows, Saint Sebastian was still alive
  • Irene of Rome hid and nursed Sebastian back to health

IN ART (AUSTIN)

  • The earliest representation of Sebastian is a mosaic in the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo (Ravenna, Italy) dated between 527 and 565
  • Another early mosaic is in the Church of San Pietro in Vincoli (Rome, Italy), probably made in the year 682. It shows a grown bearded man in court dress but contains no arrows
