Classical Conditioning

PSy 1304

What's The OBjective?

  • To fully understand Classical Conditioning
  • Be able to relate newly learned terminology to prior knowledge and experiences

Before We get Started

  • Think of a personal experience where your body had an unconditioned reaction to a specific stimuli

What is BEHAVIORISM?

  • Behaviorism - the theory that human and animal behavior can be explained in terms of conditioning
  • Consists of two types of conditioning - Operant Conditioning - Classical Conditioning

What is Classical Conditioning?

  • Classical Conditioning - Type of learning that occurs when two stimuli are repeatedly paired together

History - Ivan Pavlov

How Does it Work?

  • Unconditioned stimulus -> Unconditioned response
  • Neutral stimulus -> No conditioned response
  • Unconditioned stimulus paired with Neutral stimulus -> Conditioned reponse
  • EX: Dog salivating to the sound of a tuning fork (Neutral stimulus) after being paired with food (Unconditioned Stimulus)

how is this RELATABLE?

  • Your Personal Experience

Key Take Aways

  • Classical conditioning works by combining stimuli
  • Conditioning still works today
