Moral Character

  • The commitment to follow ones values and beliefs.
  • Moral Character is shown in many parts of the book and is a major theme in TKAM.

Examples and quotes

  • In TKAM, Atticus acts as a mentor towards Scout and Jem.
  • On page 139, Scout questions Atticus's decision to defend Robinson, a black man in court.
  • Atticus responds with,"Scout, I couldn't go to church and worship God if I didn't try to help that man."
  • Atticus is aware that he'll receive serious criticism from the public for his decision but his beliefs and morals are very strong. This ultimately dictates his controversial decision.

LYRIC BREAKDOWN

  • The song "He was my brother" was produced in 1965.
  • The song portrays the outsider role Atticus and his family play. A quote that relates to the moral character theme is "Go home outsider this town is going to be your burying place.
  • Maycomb views the Finch family as outsiders because they act within their morals and not within the guidelines of society .
