Thurgood Marshall was the head lawyer for the NAACP and won majority of his cases in court. The historical significance of this correlates with the theme of national identity because he was apart of the NAACP and fought for equality and freedom.

Lyndon B. Johnson passed more civil rights legislation than any other president. The historical significance of this correlates with the theme of national identity because while Johnson was president he helped civil rights and furthered equality in the US.

NAACP organization founded in 1909 to promote full racial equality. The historical significance of this correlates with the theme of historical perspective and national identity because as colored people in America they aren't seen as fully equal. This organization promoted that everyone were fully equal on all levels. This includes freedom just as everyone else not matter race, gender, or class.

Immigration Act 1965 ended quotas on immigration that had been in place since the 20s. Led to an increase in ethnic diversity in America. The historical significance of this correlates with the theme of movement because this act allowed people from other countries to move to the US. The allowed diversity to spread in the US.

Cuban Missile Crisis the closest the USSR and USA ever came to nuclear war d during the Cold war period. The historical significance of this correlates with the theme of national identity because the US was scared of the USSR having missiles so close to America. It especially scared them because the USSR were against them and were communist. Everyone feared communist and losing their identities as individuals.

United Farm Workers fought for higher wages and better conditions for Hispanic migrant workers. The historical significance of this correlates with the theme of historical perspective and movement. Many hispanic people moved to the US for a better life and make money. They want to be paid equally for the work they do that why they can provide for their families.

Medicare/Medicaid provided hospital insurance and low cost medical care to the elderly and benefits for the poor. The historical significance of this correlates with the theme of national identity because it helping those of older age and lower class. The purpose is to help people.

Job Corps these programs addressed areas such as civil rights, education, and poverty. The historical significance of this correlates with the theme of historical perspective because the goal of this program was to help those in lower classes and give those who didn't have the chance, education.

Montgomery Bus Boycotts Rosa Parks sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycotts which was led by Dr. Martin Luther King. The historical significance of this correlates with the theme of freedom because after the Plessy v Ferguson case Jim Crow Laws were put into place. Due to this they still were discriminated and mistreated the law just sounded "good".

Peace Corps American volunteer program created under JFK that provides aid and assistance to third world countries. The historical significance of this correlates with the theme of movement and national identity because the program helped those part of third world countries. His goal was to help those countries in need helping them find themselves as a country.

Hollywood 10 Writers and directors who were put on trail by HUAC for refusing to name communists in Hollywood. The historical significance of this correlates with the theme of national identity because people were in fear of communism and wanted to get rid of anyone with those ties. They were scared of loosing their freedom.

Joseph Stalin Communist Totalitarian dictator of the USSR from 1923-1953 originally an Ally in WWII. The historical significance of this correlates with the theme of national identity because Stalin was a dictator therefore he was apart of the Cold War. Another instance where the US didn't want communism to spread and wanted to keep their freedom.

Federal Highway Act Congress passed the construction of 40,000 miles of interstate highways mainly in the case of a crisis the US could transport military supplies quickly across the country. The historical significance of this correlates with the theme of movement because it allowed transportation in the US.

Capitalism economic systems where people can own their own business and won their own home. The historical significance of this correlates with the theme of national identity and freedom because it is a system that is totally opposite from tyranny and communism. It allows people to have individuality and freedom.

Jonas Salk Created the first vaccine for polio. Advance in medicine during the 1950's led to a higher life expectancy for people. The historical significance of this correlates with the theme of historical perspective because now that vaccines are being made people are living longer. Although since vaccines need to be purchased or health insurance has to cover it; many of those who were poor and under privileged wouldn't have as much access to it.

Korean War Conflict that began because the communist North attacked the democratic South. america stepped in to help the South fight against communist aggression. At the end of the conflict boundary lines were drawn where they started at the 38th Parallel. The historical significance of this correlates with the theme of national identity and freedom because North Korea is filled with communism and is against individuality. Without individuality you don't have any freedom. The war contained finding national identity within Korea ( communism and democracy).

Marshall Plan program that was proposed by Secretary of State (George Marshall). the US supplied economic aid to European nations to help them rebuild after World War II. The historical significance of this correlates with the theme of freedom because while nations are in the state of destruction it is very hard to rebuild quickly. Marshall wanted to help the European Nations rebuild that way they can have their freedom again and not live in horrible times.

White Collar Due to more men attending college this resulted in more White Collar type jobs in areas such as advertising, plastics, and management. The historical significance of this correlates with the theme of historical perspective because it is connected to gender. Only men had jobs that included advertising and management. Most women in the 50's worked as secretaries, cashiers, and nurses.

HUAC The government agency investigated alleged disloyalty and subversive activities on the part of private citizens, public employees, and those organizations suspected of having Communist ties. The historical significance of this correlates with the theme of national identity because the purpose of the group was to seek out those who may have connections to Communism. Once again, if communism took over the world the US would lose its national identity and their freedom.

Containment the blocking of another nation's attempt to spread its influence-especially the efforts of the United States to block the spread of Soviet influence during the late 1940s and early 1950s. The historical significance correlates with the theme of National Identity because they wanted to stop communism from spreading. If communism spread and took over the world the US would loose its national identity.
