the BIG ideas - crime

Consensus approaches - crimes are those actions that wider society has agreed are unacceptable and therefore placed into law as being unacceptable.

Conflict approaches - crimes are those actions which the powerful wish to limit in order to better control the masses. Laws are passed which suit the needs of the powerful, not the many.

the BIG ideas - deviance

Consensus approaches - deviant actions are those which go against the norms of society - they are viewed as inappropriate rather than seriously damaging and in need of adding to the law.

Conflict approaches - deviant behaviour is labelled by those who are powerful enough to label the actions of others and be listened to.
