Why do we need to be aware of dyslexia?

What is currently known about dyslexia

  • It is a neurological issue.
  • The fibers in the brain are connected differently.
  • It is genetic.
  • Developing dyslexia can be noticed at primary school level.
  • It mostly affects reading and writing areas of language learning in the L1 and L2.

What is currently known about dyslexia

  • Dyslexia affects 1 in 5 people.
  • Dyslexia is not an issue with vision but with the way the brain processes the infomation.
  • Dyslexia can be placed on a sceptrum and can have a variety of intensities.

Overlaps

  • Dyslexia usually can be linked to other learning difficulties.
  • It is very rare for a person to only have dyslexia.
  • In some cases dyslexia can have a higher intensity due to these overlaps, and affect other aspects of language learning.
