Election of 1860

Abraham Lincoln beat Stephan Douglas in the presidential election and this is what started the idea of the civil war

Secession

Once Abraham Lincoln was elected, states in the south wanted to secede from the us to keep slavery

Missouri compromise

Since there was free states, the Missouri compromise balanced out the free states

Cotton gin

During the time of slavery (made by the north) the cotton gin would pick the seeds out of the cotton faster but it resulted in a bigger demand for slaves which upset the north

Compromise of 1850

WHEN California was added as a free state, the compromise made it possible for slave owners to hunt down runaway slaves and bring them back

The Underground Railroad wasn't an actual Railroad but it was a network of passages that lead to the north so slaves could have a better way in life
