MARK 10:21

THE RICH YOUNG MAN.

Jesus looked at him and loved him. "One thing you lack," he said. "Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."

This passage shows Jesus talking to a rich man, telling him to sell his belongings for a good cause. By giving his possessions to the poor, he will be able to receive treasures when he goes to heaven. God proclaimed that we should help our neighbors in time of need and to love them as ourselves. This follows the fifth Beatitude which states that if we are merciful, we will be shown mercy in heaven with Mary, God, and Jesus. God wants us to value our faith and our families more than our possessions.

While our treasures and belongings are important to us, they are not as important as God. God wants us to not value our personal belongings but each other as brothers and sisters. It not only ties in with the fifth beatitude but also the First Commandment, "You shall not have any strange gods before [God]." Jesus also taught us that when we love our neighbors as ourselves, we are loving God because God created us and our neighbors to love each other in friendship. God will always know if we have love for him, but
He teaches us that if we value our possessions more than him, then we will go to purgatory to reflect on our sins and envious deeds.

For lent, I am going to give up cursing and using profane language in the name of our God and Jesus. I will accomplish this with heavy prayer and meditation and reflection. I will become a more optimistic person with this and I will be even more happy then I have ever been. I will have a good impression with my friends and family that surround me. God loves me and I will fulfill his duty for peace and eternal love.

This Lenten season I will be giving up retaliation and negativity to become a more controlled and optimistic person. By doing so, I will grow closer to God and I can spread optimism to other people as well as myself. This will not only be effective now but will have an effect throughout the rest of the year and my life.

All in all, God wants us to value our faith in them rather than our faith in materialistic possessions. We can do this by
"Rejoicing in hope, being patient in tribulation, and constant in prayer Romans 12:12".
