AS I LAY DYING

LUCY JORDAN
My Q3 Novel is "As I Lay Dying" by William Faulkner.

My Essential Question:
How does William Faulkner's odd narrative style affect the reader's perception of time?

My Essential Question: How does William Faulkner's odd narrative style affect the reader's perception of time?

Relation to Novel: The narrative style used in As I Lay Dying gives the reader new experiences and different aspects of time throughout the story.

Untitled Slide

- the stream of consciousness technique gives expression to the flow of thoughts and ideas inside his characters' minds
- his characters are all somewhat odd
- the mythic method is imitating mythical creatures in the personality and qualities of some of his characters

My source was an article titled "Perception and the Destruction of being in As I Lay Dying" written by Homer B. Pettey. It states the many different aspects of Faulkner's narrative style, and lists examples of them all. It focuses on both the topics, themselves, and the meanings behind them.

Untitled Slide

- the flashback technique helps the reader understand the story on a more complex level rather than just reading the monologues and dialogue between characters
- objective correlative technique is when the author uses a set of objects, a situation, or event that will define a particular emotion
- "Throughout the novel, metaphorical frames- coffin, window, door, coin, spyglass, womb, grave- represent the characters' desires to contain and to control contradictory meanings of their worlds." (Pettey 1)
- an example of this in the novel would be a fish symbolizing death:
-Vardaman's fish stands for the nature and meaning of death. Vardaman goes through the passing of his mother and realizes that the fish changes as well after she dies. He also compares his mother to the fish when they are at the river. This is a coping mechanism for him, and it helps cushion the blow of an extreme tragedy.

Untitled Slide

- diametrically opposite imagery is used in the novel to show extreme contrast between multiple moods and themes
- the use of maintaining balance between the many different narrative voices
