Self-esteem, or the way we feel about ourselves, is an important aspect of our emotional well-being. High self-esteem means that we love and accept ourselves for the way we are, and generally feel satisfied most of the time. Low self-esteem means that we are not happy with the way we are.

WHAT FACTORS INFLUENCE THE WAY WE FEEL ABOUT OURSELVES?

  • Some people struggle with their self-esteem and body image when they begin puberty because it's a time when the body goes through many changes. These changes, combined with wanting to feel accepted by our friends, means it can be tempting to compare ourselves with others. The trouble with that is, not everyone grows or develops at the same time or in the same way.

WHAT ROLE DOES THE MEDIA PLAY IN PROMOTING SELF IMAGE?

  • When you think of Cowboys what do you think of? Probably a horse, cool hat and a sheriff badge. This is the media influencing us to believe everyone or anything from that group of things looks and acts the same. So when a young person sees a popular celebrity wearing something they'll think, oh well they're wearing that and they're popular so if I look like that I will popular.
