EARTHS BALANCE

  • Ecosystems are environments
  • 3 types of organisms:
  • Producers
  • Consumers
  • Decomposers

BALANCE IN THE ECOSYSTEM

  • Non living things allow organisms to survive
  • Air
  • Water
  • Soil
  • Sunlight
  • All parts are dependent on EACHOTHER

POLLUTION

  • Changes in the environment with negative effects on life & health
  • Pollunts-things that cause pollution
  • You can prevent pollution by reducing reusing and recycling

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY

  • Responsible for reducing and controlling pollution
Functions:
Makes and enforces rules for environmental programs
Provides money for these programs, education, and scientific research
Sponsors environmental projects
Assess and solve environmental problems
increase environmental awareness
Encourage environmental education

HOW YOU CAN HELP

  • Stop pollution
  • Conserve natural resources
  • Improve living conditions for all

AIR POLLUTION

  • Motor vehicle emissions
  • Factories
  • Power plants
  • Cigarette smoke
  • Wildfires

HOW THE ATMOSPHERE IS CHANGING

  • Greenhouse effect
  • Global warming
  • Destruction of the ozone layer
Greenhouse effect: trapping of heat by carbon dioxide and other gasses in the air

Global warming: ongoing increase in earths temperature

Ozone layer: protects all living things from UV rays. Dissapearing due to chemicals.
Preserve: do not use foam packaging
Drive less
Keep chemical products sealed
Protect yourself:
SUNSCREEN

INDOOR AIR POLLUTION

  • Caused by poor ventilation, indoor chemicals, outdoor pollution and molds
  • Causes sick building syndrome
SBS: headache, eye nose or throat irritation, coughing, fatigue, dizziness or nausea

OTHER POLLUTANTS

  • Mold & bacteria
  • Asbestos
  • Formaldehyde
  • CO
  • Radon
  • Lead
  • Second hand smoke

CLEAN AIR

  • Don't smoke
  • Limit car use
  • Purchase energy efficient appliances
  • Avoid products that release pollutants
