PRESENTATION OUTLINE

SIMPLE SQUAMOUS EPITHELIUM

  • Single layer, flat, disc shaped nuclei
  • Location: kidneys, air sacs, lining of heart and blood vessels
  • Function: allows passage by diffusion

SIMPLE CUBOIDAL EPITHELIUM

  • Single layer, cube shaped, large sphere nuclei
  • Location: kidney tubes, small gland ducts, ovary surface
  • Function: secretion & absorbtion

SIMPLE COLUMNAR EPITHELIUM

  • Single layer, tall cells, oval nuclei, some have cilia
  • Location: digestive tract, gallbladder, bronchi and uterine tubes
  • Function: absorption, secretion of mucus & enzymes

PSEUDOSTRATIFIED COLUMNAR EPITHELIUM

  • Single layer, differing heights, nuclei at different levels, have cilia
  • Location: large gland ducts, male urethra,trachea, upper respiratory tract.
  • Function: secretion of mucus

STRATIFIED SQUAMOUS EPITHELIUM

  • Thick, several layers, cuboidal, columnar, and squamous cells,
  • Location: esophagus, mouth & vagina
  • Function: protects underlying tissue in areas subjected to abrasions

TRANSITIONAL EPITHELIUM

  • Cuboidal, columnar, and squamous
  • Location: uterus, bladder, urethra
  • Function: stretches readily and permits distension of urine

ADIPOSE TISSUE

  • Matrix as in areolar, closely packed fat cells, nucleus is pushed to side by fat drop
  • Location: under skin, around kidneys and eyeballs, in abdomen in breasts
  • Function: provides reserve food fuel, insulates, protects organs

FIBROCARTILAGE

  • Matrix is less firm, thick collagen fibers
  • Location: intervertebral discs, pubic symphysis, discs of knee joint
  • Function: tensile strength, absorbs compressive shock

RETICULAR CONNECTIVE TISSUE

  • Network of reticular fibers
  • Location: lymphoid organs, bone marrow
  • Function: support other cell types

DENSE CONNECTIVE TISSUE

  • Collagen fibers, elastin fibers, fibroblast
  • Location: tendons, most ligaments, aponeuroses
  • Function: attaches muscles to bone or to muscles

HYALINE CARTILAGE

  • Firm matrix, collagen fibers, form matrix
  • Location: embryonic skeleton ends of long bones and joint cavities, cartilage in rib cage, nose, trachea and larynx
  • Function: supports and cushions, resists compression

BONE

  • Hard, calcified matrix,
  • Location: bones
  • Function: supports and protects, stores calcium and other minerals

SKELETAL MUSCLE

  • Long, cylindrical, multinuclei cells
  • Location: skeletal muscle attatched to bones
  • Function: voluntary movement, and control

CARDIAC MUSCLE

  • Branching, striated, cells that interdigitate specialized junctions
  • Location: walls of the heart
  • Function: as it contracts it propels blood into circulation; involuntary control.

SMOOTH MUSCLE

  • Spindle shaped cells with central nuclei
  • Location: mostly in the walls of hollow organs
  • Functions: propels substances or objects along internal passageways; involuntary controls

NERVOUS TISSUE

  • Neurons are branching cells, contribute to nervous tissue
  • Location: brain, spinal cord , and nerves
  • Function: transmit electrical signals

AREOLAR CONNECTIVE TUSSUE

  • Gel like matrix, fibroblasts, phagocytes, white blood cells, etc
  • Location: under epithelial of body, packages organs, surrounds capillaries
  • Function: wraps and cushions organs
