6 WAYS TO IDENTIFY THE QUALITY OF SOIL

  • Soil profile/horizons
  • Composition
  • Texture
  • Particle size
  • Permeability
  • pH level

SOIL HORIZONS

  • Horizon A - Valuable topsoil that has humus, clay, and minerals. Most animals live here because it's rich in nutrients
  • Horizon B - Subsoil (with a little humus)
  • Horizon C - Parent soil

IMPORTANCE OF ph LEVEL AND PERMEABILITY

  • Permeability - open spaces in soil that allows water drainage his is important because if there aren't any permeabilities there would be a lot of water on the surface.
  • pH level - acidic level this is important because plants grow between 5-7 pH level.

WHY GOOD QUALITY SOIL IS IMPORTANT

  • If you don't have good soil animals living in the soil might not survive
  • If you don't have good quality soil you might be able to plant plants
  • Having good quality soil maintains the ecosystem.
