TEMPERATE FOREST CHARACTERISTICS

  • Climate: The climate of temperate forests is wet.
  • Average temperature: The average temperature in temperate forests is 50°F. Summers are mild, and average about 70°F
  • Average rain: 30 to 60 inches a year.
  • Seasons: The temperate deciduous forest is a biome that is always changing. It has four distinct seasons: winter, spring, summer and fall.
  • Locations: Europe, eastern Asia, and the eastern United States.

PLANTS

  • mountain laurel, azaleas mosses and broadleaf trees
  • Seasonal loss of leaves enables plants to avoid damage during harsh winter freezes. When longer days and warmer temperatures return, leaves regrow and plants resume photo- synthesis.

ANIMALS

  • Porcupines,woodpeckers, raccoons and cardinals
  • Some animals, like most birds, migrate to warmer areas until the winter passes. Instead of mov- ing to avoid the winter, some animals, like black bears and some snake species, hibernate.

THREATS

  • Farming, mining, hunting, logging and urbanization are some of the human activities that have affected negatively this biome, resulting in biodiversity loss, pollution, deforestation and habitat loss and fragmentation.
