MOUNT ST. HELENS

LOCATION

  • Mount St. Helens is located in the United States, in the state of Washington. It is located near Skanania County and Cowlitz County, where it crosses between the two of them.

HEIGHT

  • It's current height, as of 1980, is 8,363 feet (2.6 km) tall, however, prior to it's major eruption, it was about 9,600 feet (2.9 km) tall.

HISTORY OF ERUPTIONS

  • The first known eruption occured during the year 1800, and happened on and off from the years 1831-1857, before reaching a quiet phase, which lasted for 123 years

  • However, in the year 1980, it's worst eruption yet happened, an eruption so damaging it destroyed nearly everything in an 8 mile radius, as well as shaving off 1.3K feet off the height of Mount St. Helens itself

  • In the years 2004-2008, the mountain had continued volcanic activity, however these were more minor, and ceased in 2008, when the small earthquakes happening there ( The main cause of the activity) ceased as well.

INTERESTING FACTS

  • The mountain got it's name from an English lord, named Lord St. Helens, who helped a man named George Vancouver survey the area.
  • An estimated 57 people were killed in the 1980 eruption of the mountain.
  • In the winters of 1980 and 1981, a glacier formed on the mountain, which is now known as Crater Glacier.
