Stages of Inquiry

• Searching: identification and representation of the problem
• Solving: gathering information and generating a solution
• Creating: making a product, i.e. presentation
• Sharing: communication of findings

Inquiry Learning

5 E Learning Cycle

Engagement: get learners engaged in the topic

Exploration: learners explore the topic, gathering information and data

Explanation: learners provide explanations and reasoning behind their findings

Elaboration: learners put together a product to pass along the information to others

Evaluation: learners look at each others' work, ask questions, and get clarification on the information presented

Socratic Dialogue

-Asking "why" is where it starts
-Good technique for studying ethics
-Develops critical thinking

Discussion Leader

• Starts with an open ended question
• Maintains focus on the topic
• Ensures all participants get equal time
• Clarify, synthesize, and restate points to make sure others are keeping up

Participants

• Need to think and speak persuasively
• Need to be active listeners
• Must have respect for others and their view points in order to create a safe place to engage in dialogue
