Causes Of Civil War

  • Compromise of 1850. It was when The Compromise of 1850 was a package of five separate bills passed by the United States Congress in September 1850, which defused a four-year political confrontation between slave and free states regarding the status of territories acquired during the Mexican–American War (1846–48). The compromise, drafted by Whig Senator Henry Clay of Kentucky and brokered by Clay and Democratic Senator Stephen Douglas of Illinois, reduced sectional conflict. Controversy arose over the Fugitive Slave provision. The Compromise was greeted with relief, although each side disliked specific provisions of.

  • California became a free state(what the North gets) south gets the fugitive Slave act. It was made by Henry Clay.

Causes of Civil War

  • Fugitive Slave Act- in 1850 this law started that any runaway slave could be captured and sold back into slavery.Some freed African Americans were also captured and sold into slavery.

FORT SUMTER

  • On April 10,1861 Beaurguard in command of the forces at Charleston,South Carolina,demanded surrender from the Union garrison of Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. The Union refused and fought them. The confederate won. This was the first battle of the civil war.The Union thought "they may have won the battle,but not the war" the confederate's thought "we are going to beat the Union scum every battle"

  • The Union stopped the Confederate from invading Maryland. The Union won,they said "The Confederate are strong,but not strong enough" the Confederate's said "They might of won this battle but we will win,not the battles but the war".The significance of the battle was that it gave Abraham Lincoln the courage to announce his Emancipation Proclamation.

  • The Union won this battle barely.The significance was that the North was brutality weak after the battle. And the Confederate (with Robert E. Lee) sent off to Virginia.The Union said "We have won another battle,we are on our way to success to winning the war, but we won by an inch"the confederate's said "they may have won the battle,but they won barely,after our plan,they won't win the war,we will "

BATTLE OF VICKSBURH

  • This battle gave the Union full control of the Mississippi River and cut the confederacy in two. The Union won. Abraham Lincoln said " We just gained the whole Mississippi River and we cut the confederacy into two,huh I deserve another U.S. Flag". Robert E. Lee said "We are not losing this war do you hear me, our army is cut in half but we are going to take the Mississippi River from those dumb Unions"

  • It was a document that was signed on January1,1863.
  • This document freed the slaves of the rebelling Confederate states during the civil war. It's first glance was a paradox " Oh thank god we are finally free by Abraham Lincoln" a slave said .

  • Harried mercilessly by Federal troops and continually cut off from turning south, Lee headed west, eventually arriving in Appomattox County on April 8. Heading for the South Side Railroad at Appomattox Station,the Confederates were cut off once again and nearly surrounded by Union troops near the small village of Appomattox Court House. Despite a final desperate attempt to escape, Lee’s army was trapped. General Lee surrendered his remaining troops to General Grant at the McLean House on the afternoon of April 9.

THE UNION HAD

  • Major General Don Carlos Buell stood among the senior Northern commanders early in the Civil War, led the Army of the Ohio in the critical Kentucky theater in 1861-62, and helped shape the direction of the conflict during its first years.

THE SOUTH HAD

  • Robert E. Lee was the South's greatest general during the Civil War. He graduated from West Point Military Academy and became a colonel in the army before the Civil War began. He was from Virginia and decided to fight on the side of the Confederates even though President Lincoln asked him to be commander of the entire Union Army. General Lee wanted to fight for the South and remain loyal to his home state.

THOMAS STONEWALL JACKSON

  • Stonewall Jackson was a leading Confederate general during the U.S. Civil War, commanding forces at Manassas, Antietam, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville.

PHILIP BAZAAR

  • Bazaar was an immigrant that he was one of the few people that helped the assault on Fort Fisher during the civil war. He was awarded the congressional medal in 1865.

WILLIAM CARNEY

  • William Carney was an African American soldier during the American Civil War. In 1900, he was awarded the Medal of Honor for his gallantry during the Battle of Fort Wagner in 1863. Because his actions preceded those of other medal honorees, he is considered to be the first African American to be granted the Medal of Honor.

ASSASSINATION OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN

  • On April 14, 1865, John Wilkes Booth, a famous actor and Confederate sympathizer, fatally shot President Abraham Lincoln at a play at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C. The attack came only five days after Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered his massive army at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, effectively ending the American Civil War.
