The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

Interesting Mark Twain facts

  • Became a steamboat captain in 1859
  • Name Mark Twain means "safe to sail"
  • Very outspoken on racism, slavery, etc.

Mark Twain's views

  • He was outspoken against racism, slavery, etc.
  • He felt that religion and politics were evil.

The 1800s: What was going on in the U.S.

  • The Civil War
  • Emancipation Proclaimation
  • Slavery

What was going on in the world:

  • 1812 Overture first played in Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Savior
  • Orient express running between Paris and Constantinople

Time Period and Setting

  • Negroes were considered inferior.
  • Slavery was a national thing.
  • Racism was common, especially in the South.
  • Even after the Emancipation Proclamation, there was still slavery.

Main Character

  • The main character, Huck Finn, is adventurous and courageous.
  • Over the course of the novel, he bonds with Jim, a slave.
  • He always is in trouble.

Conflict 1

  • Character vs Society- Huck bonds with Jim, a slave, over the course of the novel. This was unheard of at the time.

Conflict 2

  • Character vs Character-Huck is facing off against his father, who wants Huck's money that he got at the end of Tom Sawyer.

Prediction

  • I believe over the course of the novel, Huck will bond more with Jim.
  • He will face his father.
  • He will return to the Widow Mary, and be "sivilized."

The Best

  • The best thing about the novel so far, is the use of different speech types, to emphasize the point that the setting is in the South.

The Worst

  • One thing I don't like about this novel so far is the fact that Huck's father is abusive, making Huck come to reality.
