How do tsunamis occur? Tsunami are actually waves caused by sudden movement of the ocean because of earthquakes, landslides on the sea floor, land slumping into the ocean, major volcanic eruptions or large meteorite impacts.

FACTS

  • Tsunamis can travel up to 500 miles per hour at times!
  • Some tsunamis have taken some pf the biggest buildings in the United States.
  • The biggest tsunamis that was recorded was in Lituya Bay Alaska with a height of 1,720 ft tall
  • Tsunami average waves record from 10 to 100 feet tall!

The first wave of a tsunami is usually not the strongest, the waves get bigger and stronger as they go, you know when a tsunami is happening because the tide dies down and soon becomes light water that's traveling towards the tsunami.
