• Born in Ponce, Puerto Rico
• Born September 30th, 1946
• One of eight children
• Birth name Hector Juan Perez

EARLY LIFE

• At age 14, made $18 a night singing
• Arrived in NY on May 3, 1963 at age 17
• Changed his name to Lavoe (The Voice)

MUSIC CAREER

• Was introduced to Willie Colon
• Hector was everything Willie was looking for
• Willie and Hector recorded first album "El Malo"

FAMILY

• Carmen Castro became pregnant in 1967
• Jose Alberto Perez was born Oct 30, 1968
• Nilda Rosado became pregnant
• Hector Jr. was born on Sept. 25, 1969

DOWNFALL

• Introduced to drugs at a party
• Became addicted to heroin
• Drug use broke up the band
• Lavoe suffered a debilitating breakdown
• A fire in 1987 completely destroyed his home

• Mother was brutally murdered
• May 7th, 1987, Hector Jr. was shot
• Hector was diagnosed with AIDs in '88
• June 28, 1988, Lavoe tried to kill himself
• Hector died on June 29, 1993 due to AIDs
