PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Mouth:Begins the break down of food into smaller pieces through mechanical digestion (teeth) and chemical digestion (saliva).
Esophagus: muscular tube that moves food from the mouth to the stomach. Smooth muscles in the wall move food down by waves of muscular contractions.
Stomach: muscular sack that continues the process of mechanical digestion by the movement of muscles causing food to mix.
Small intestine:small in diameter but 4 to 7 meters long where most of chemical digestion of food takes place. Nutrients from food are absorbed through the small intestine with the help of finger like projections Cale villi
Large intestine: the organ where water is absorbed from the food and taken into the bloodstream;
Prepares the remaining undigested food for elimination from the body
Rectum: short tube that stores solid waste until it is ready to be eliminated.
Liver: produces bile which is used by the body to break up fat particles.
Gallbladder: Stores bile produced by the liver.
Pancreas: produces digestive juices that help further break down the food in the small intestine.
Epiglottis: covers the opening to the trachea (windpipe) to prevent food from entering,otherwise you would choke.
